Mother forced son into wheelchair - BBC UK News Posted: 16 Oct 2009 11:10 AM PDT A mother is facing jail after she admitted persuading everyone, including her son, that he had fake illnesses. The 35-year-old from Devon, who cannot be named, even forced her healthy son to have surgery and use a wheelchair. She admitted cruelty against her eight-year-old son, who is now in foster care, and perverting the course of justice. She was told by the judge at Exeter Crown Court that she would face jail when sentenced in the new year. The scam started after the poorly newborn boy was put in a special baby care unit. But his mother continued to pretend her son was ill for the next six-and-a-half years. She once told a paediatrician that he could never keep his food down and he had surgery to install a tube into his stomach. After that he was put in a wheelchair. The case came to light after she took samples of her son's blood to a hospital. Medics suspected that she had laced his food with sugar to get them artificially high. Police said she was claiming up to £20,000 a year in disability living allowances and a Motability car. Det Con Mark Uren, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said after the case: "She is a cruel, manipulative, evil mother who constantly lied to the medical professionals that her son was the most ill child in Britain. "She is a calculated, manipulative woman." Print Sponsor This content has passed through fivefilters.org. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Team raised £395 for hospital units - North West Evening Mail Posted: 16 Oct 2009 04:01 AM PDT Published at 13:09, Friday, 16 October 2009 A RUGBY team raised hundreds of pounds for two hospital units with their fancy dress pub crawl. Roose Pioneers players and coaches raised more than £395 with their annual bucket collection, in Barrow. Each year the Barrow team split the cash between Furness General Hospital's Special Care Baby Unit and the Oncology Unit. Team members presented cheques to staff at the units last week. Roose Pioneers player Dan Sharp attended the presentation with his newborn son Blake. The two-and-half week old baby received care from the Special Care Baby Unit when he was born. Mr Sharp said: "It was quite apt this year because my son was in the Special Care Baby Unit for three nights. "The care was second to none, it was fantastic." Mr Sharp also praised the work of the Oncology Unit. He said the team members who visited the unit last week were all impressed with the staff and the facility.

Nicholas Cage visits baby unit in Bath - ITN Posted: 16 Oct 2009 08:33 AM PDT Nicholas Cage visits baby unit in BathFri Oct 16 2009 17:57:41 The Oscar-winning actor toured the baby unit at Bath's Royal United Hospital and met new parents and their babies. He bought a house in the Somerset village of Baltonsborough, near Glastonbury, three years ago. Cage, 45, is backing the hospital's Forever Friends Appeal to raise more than £3 million for a new neo-natal intensive care unit. He bought a "baby brick" to symbolise real bricks for the new unit amid reports that he owed more than six million dollars to the taxman in the US. The star of Conair and Leaving Las Vegas has had a tax lien placed on his New Orleans properties by the Internal Revenue Service after he failed to pay income tax on his wages dating back to 2007, according to celebrity website TMZ. Owner of an extensive property portfolio, Cage has reportedly put Midford Castle, near Bath, on the market after buying it for £5 million two years ago and last month sold his £4 million townhouse in Bath's Georgian Circus.
