Man arrested after baby found under the influence of marijuana - Inside Bay Area Posted: 21 Oct 2009 08:13 AM PDT SOLANO COUNTY — A Vacaville man was arrested Tuesday an infant in his care was found to be under the influence of marijuana. Jonathan Velasquez Sr., 22, was booked into Solano County Jail on suspicion of felony child endangerment. The incident came to light last Thursday, when the University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento alerted Child Protective Services that a 1-year-old boy in their care had either inhaled or ingested the drug. CPS then notified Vacaville police, who assumed the investigation. The boy and his 2-year-old brother were removed from their south Vacaville home and have since been placed with relatives, Sgt. Charlie Spruill said. The baby required immediate medical attention, Spruill said. "We have determined that it was not accidental," the sergeant added. Velasquez was subsequently identified as the suspect in the case and was arrested. The suspect, Spruill said, admitted that he liked to use drugs but did not safeguard against the drugs falling into the hands of his children. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
Teen Deemed 'Not Bright Enough' to Keep Baby - myfoxny.com Posted: 20 Oct 2009 10:37 AM PDT (MYFOX NATIONAL) - Scottish teen Kerry Robertson, who is pregnant and has mild learning difficulties, was told by social workers this week that they believe she is not intelligent enough to care for her baby and that the child will be taken from her shortly after birth, the Telegraph reports . Last month, Robertson, 17, was prevented from marrying her fiance Mark McDougall, 25, after officials claimed that she "did not understand the implications of getting married." Scottish law states that a registrar may refuse to marry a couple if they believe one or both parties lack the mental capacity to understand what the institution of marriage is about. Robertson is due in January and has been told that she will only be allowed a few hours with her baby, who she has already named Ben, before he is taken into foster care. The couple is distressed over the news that they won't be able to raise their child. "I couldn't believe it. I am so upset. I can't stop crying," Robertson said. McDougall said he'd like to take on full responsibility for his son but claims that he is powerless because he and Robertson are not married. "Social Services are ruining our lives. As we are not married -- because social workers would not let us marry -- it seems I have no rights as a dad at all," he explained. "We feel helpless." Robertson's grandmother has offered to raise the child, but McDougall said social services said it is unlikely the grandmother's application for custody will be accepted. Stephen Moore, the council's executive director of social services, said, "Much of the work we do is governed by legislation. Complex decisions are made that balance risk and welfare while supporting people at times of personal or family need. We will always work with people for the best outcome for all involved." In May, Rachel Pullen, a 24-year-old mother from Nottingham, England, claimed her 3-year-old daughter was taken away from her by social services when the child was just 6 months old because officials said she was "too stupid" to care for the child. Pullen is fighting the decision in the European Court of Human rights. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
Baby's 'meningitis' death probed - BBC UK News Posted: 21 Oct 2009 10:50 AM PDT A health authority in Kent has started an investigation into the death of a baby from suspected meningitis. Harvey Davies, who suffered brain damage and organ failure, died on Sunday aged two weeks. West Kent NHS Primary Care Trust said it would look into Harvey's death following complaints from his family. The family claim a GP told Harvey's mother, Sharon Humm, 21, of Swanley, that he had colic and did not check the baby's temperature. Harvey's grandmother Sharon Humm said her daughter had been left "devastated" by his death and was too upset to talk. 'Little miracle' Mrs Humm, 46, said: "We felt neglected from the time of birth. Harvey had mauve hands and purple feet when he was born." Harvey was born five weeks prematurely and had been described as a "little miracle" after his mother was told she had polycystic ovary syndrome. He was taken to a GP surgery on Friday after the family became concerned that his skin looked a "sickly yellow" colour and his breathing was laboured. However, Mrs Humm said the doctor sent them home with a prescription without taking his temperature. The baby's father, Dan Davies, 22, said: "We just listened to her because we thought she was the best person to tell us what to do." Harvey was taken to Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford by ambulance the following day when he suffered a seizure and later transferred to the intensive baby care unit at St Thomas' Hospital in London. The family were were told Harvey could have contracted meningitis from his infected umbilical cord. Mrs Humm added that staff at both hospitals had been "fantastic". Dr James Thallon, NHS West Kent's medical director, said: "We are extremely saddened to hear of the loss of a young child and our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. "NHS West Kent will investigate the circumstances around this tragic death, as is routine in these circumstances." He said it would be inappropriate to comment further "before the facts become clear". Print Sponsor This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
AMA Deeply Disappointed Senate Has Failed Seniors, Baby Boomers and ... - AMA Posted: 21 Oct 2009 12:16 PM PDT Permanent repeal of the Medicare physician payment formula is essential to comprehensive health system reform Statement attributable to: "The AMA is deeply disappointed that the Senate today blocked consideration of S. 1776, legislation to preserve access to health care for America's seniors, baby boomers and military families. Senator Stabenow is a long-time champion for patients and physicians, and the AMA, AARP and MOAA strongly supported her bill that would have laid the foundation to permanently fix the Medicare physician payment formula and keep Medicare strong as millions of baby boomers enter the program in just two years. "As we work to improve the health system, permanent repeal of the payment formula is essential to ensuring the security and stability of Medicare. On January first, Medicare physician payments are scheduled to be cut by 21 percent, with more cuts in years to come. Nearly 90 percent of people age 50 and older are concerned that the current Medicare physician payment formula threatens their access to care. "While short-term fixes have temporarily averted widespread access problems, they have also grown the size of the problem – and the cost of reform. The AMA is committed to fixing the Medicare payment problem once and for all for seniors, baby boomers and the physicians who care for them. "There is widespread agreement among Republicans and Democrats that the formula is broken and needs to be repealed. Congress created the Medicare physician payment system, and Congress needs to fix this problem once and for all to fulfill its obligation to seniors, baby boomers and military families. Permanent repeal of the Medicare physician payment formula is essential to comprehensive health system reform." ### For more information, please contact: Brenda L.
