Officers say she left her 8-month-old son in her car with the windows rolled up and the engine turned off Thursday while shopping at a Wal-Mart in North Port.

Souder talks Health Care at Hospital

By JOHN KLINE

U.S. Rep. Mark Souder, 3rd-District, made a brief stop at Goshen General Hospital Friday afternoon for a round table discussion seeking input from local health care professionals on pending health care reform legislation.

A strong opponent of the current health care legislation being sought by President Obama's administration, Souder said he decided to do the round table discussion Friday in order to hear the opinions of those who actually work on the front lines of the health care industry.

"My goal here is to hear from each of you," Souder told the gathered crowd of doctors, surgeons and local health care professionals.

And with the current health care proposal now sitting at just over 2,000 pages, those professionals had plenty of concerns to air.

Some of the issues expressed to Sounder included concerns over possible surcharges being placed on higher income individuals, increases in mandates on existing plans, a lack of emphasis on disease prevention instead of treatment, and a lack of tort reform legislation aimed at protecting doctors from frivolous lawsuits.

Also striking a very local cord were concerns over how the new legislation would affect the area's large Amish population.

"They have no right to be exempted from the system," Souder said of the currently worded legislation. "As long as the Amish enter public hospitals... as long as they use any kind of public facilities, they can't be exempt any more than other religious groups."

Souder said the current legislation could also force churches and other religious institutions to provide health care options for missionaries, child care workers, and even church camps conducted under their banners.

"This is going to be a religious liberty question," Souder said.

Also brought up as a concern was what many in the industry feel is a lack of incentives for those consciously pursuing a healthy lifestyle, such as not smoking and eating right.

On the flip side, Souder noted that issues of genetic predisposition could throw a hitch in that argument, as simply pursuing a healthy lifestyle may not be enough for those who are already genetically predisposed to certain diseases and disorders.

While strongly opposed to the current legislation and the speed at which it is being pushed through, Souder was quick to admit at the close of his talk that debate and change is needed in the health care field.

"We're having these kinds of debates, but we're having them way too fast, with most members not being engaged," Souder said, "But we are having the debates, and it's helping to have those debates."

Souder added that lasting change will not be possible without the full cooperation of everyone connected to the health care field, which includes government, insurance, and medical representatives.

Jim Dague, chief executive officer of Goshen Health Systems, agreed, urging those in attendance to not give up on the overall reform process despite what some may see as a currently flawed proposal.

"There has to be health care reform," Dague said. "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water."
