I'll take a condom over a baby - Detroit Free Press Posted: 24 Aug 2009 01:11 PM PDT Posted August 24, 2009 - 8:38 a.m.BY ONEITA JACKSON Last week I found out that two members of my extended family are about to become parents. Oh, joy! They're teenagers. Oh, my. Both are 18-year-old boys who just graduated from high school and are headed to college. I was in the middle of a just-checking-in text when I found out: Fam is fine. 2 new babies coming. I read the names of the parents-to-be and called my friend. Who!?! I yelled. After I got over my shock, my friend and I talked about the situation. Have they ever heard of a condom? I asked. Apparently not. See, this is a conversation I've had with my son, I told him. You can talk to them until you're blue in the face, he said. I know, man, but we have to have these conversations. Earlier this year I had a raw, real and reasonable conversation with my son that was prompted by the fact that my 40-year-old friend and his wife were about to become grandparents. Of twins. Their daughter is 16. You remember your friend in D.C.? I asked my son. Yes. She's pregnant. She is? My 15-year-old son was as shocked as I was. I don't expect you to have sex, but I know that you are going to be catching feelings down there, and if you decide to go and poke somebody, you don't need to go in there raw. Get a condom. We talked about AIDS and STDs and stuff and the responsibility of parenthood. You don't even take out your trash, how are you going to take care of a baby? Because I know he thinks something is wrong with me, I dispatched him to talk to men - his father, my brother, The Fellas (my friends) and my pastor. The other day, after I hung up with my friend, I had another conversation with him. You know your friend ... He was as shocked as I was. I told him that his friends come from good, two-parent households, that they have a strong support network and that it will be difficult, but the children will be loved and OK. But you don't bring no babies in this house! So, Mom, you wouldn't support me? he asked. Am I supposed to? ONEITA JACKSON writes the O Street blog at www.freep.com/ostreet. Randall Terry's skits skewer health-care reform - Nashville Tennessean Posted: 24 Aug 2009 12:06 PM PDT On a Church Street sidewalk, Randall Terry raised his prop knife high, then brought it plunging down into the chest of a hapless baby doll. "I'm the doctor, and I stab babies," he had explained earlier. Dressed head to toe in costume surgical scrubs, the 50-year-old activist chucked the doll over one shoulder and held out his hand expectantly. A large white man in a Barack Obama mask obligingly handed him the next victim. After the "doctor" had dispatched three dolls in rapid succession, a tiny woman in a white granny wig tottered over to him to accept her "health-care ration" coupon. Obama gave the thumbs-down. The doctor jabbed granny in the neck with a needle, and she fell down dead. Terry, founder of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, is branching out into the health-care debate these days. He's been staging protest skits and stunts around the country, and on Sunday he brought his show to Nashville to perform outside the closed office of U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Nashville. "I know these skits are a little edgy," said Terry, who is based in Florida but is taking a five-day, seven-state tour of Southern congressional offices. "But they're meant to jolt people into reality." The next skit involved the guy in the Obama mask holding up passers-by at paintball gunpoint, demanding money from them, then blindfolding the baby dolls, lining them up in a row and shooting them point-blank in the face with blasts of air. Viewers' reactions varyUp and down Church Street, jaws dropped. "It's an angry white man in a black man's mask," said Nashville resident James Davis, an African-American who was watching the proceedings from across the street. "They're just trying to shock people. They're trying to say, Barack Obama doesn't care about you, he doesn't care about your kids, because he's black." But the performance got an ovation from Renee Sawyer, passing by on her way to the public library next door: "I don't go to the doctor, I don't take prescription drugs, so why should I pay for someone else's health care?" Baby's father arrested in death investigation - Minneapolis Star Tribune Posted: 24 Aug 2009 12:28 PM PDT The father of a Bloomington baby found dead Saturday has been arrested on suspicion of child endangerment. Police found the father, 29, late Saturday walking outdoors near the apartment where his son was found dead, Bloomington Police Cmdr. Mark Stehlik said. Authorities still aren't saying how they think the baby died, pending a report from the Hennepin County medical examiner's office. The 8-month-old boy's mother called police about 3:15 p.m. Saturday when she found her son unresponsive; he had been in his father's care in the family's apartment at 800 W. 106th St. The baby was pronounced dead at the scene. His father was missing at the time. The father, who is not being named because he has not been charged, was convicted in 2003 of malicious punishment of a child, and in 2006 of domestic assault by strangulation. It's unclear whether the couple had other children, Stehlik said. Reached on Sunday, the child's mother declined to comment. Police are not saying what led to the boy's death.
