Gov't Guidelines Deny Care to Premature Baby - New American Posted: 11 Sep 2009 03:48 PM PDT As Americans weigh the potential results of President Obama's divisive efforts to collectivize the nation's healthcare, evidence continues to mount for the mind-numbing inhumanity that has resulted from socialized medicine in other "developed" countries. While fears of heathcare rationing and governmental ''death panels" have received a great deal of attention, the risks of socialized medicine for the youngest Americans have not received the same scrutiny. A September 10 article in the online edition of London's Daily Mail recounts the horrifying details of a boy, Jayden Capewell, who was condemned to death because he was born two days earlier than government guidelines stipulate for giving healthcare to a child born prematurely. According to the Daily Mail: Doctors left a premature baby to die because he was born two days too early, his devastated mother claimed yesterday. Sarah Capewell begged them to save her tiny son, who was born just 21 weeks and five days into her pregnancy — almost four months early. They ignored her pleas and allegedly told her they were following national guidelines that babies born before 22 weeks should not be given medical treatment. Miss Capewell, 23, said doctors refused to even see her son Jayden, who lived for almost two hours without any medical support. She said he was breathing unaided, had a strong heartbeat and was even moving his arms and legs, but medics refused to admit him to a special care baby unit. Miss Capewell is now fighting for a review of the medical guidelines. As if these details were not appalling enough, according to Miss Capewell, doctors refused to even attempt to stop her labor, and would not provide her with steroid injections that would have helped strengthen Jayden's lungs — which could have improved his chances for survival. This is the reality of governmentally administered healthcare rationing: allegations of premature infants left to die, with doctors literally refusing to even attempt to save the children's lives. Such tragedies are the inevitable result of the cold law of dictates handed down to bind the hands of doctors. Granted, the statistical probabilities of a child surviving such an early birth are appalling low — but children are not "statistics": they are a blessed gift of God, and in the case of Jayden Capewell, one who was deeply loved by a mother who simply wanted a chance for her son to live. The horror of Sarah Capewell's experience under socialized medicine was only heightened when she learned of a child born even earlier than Jayden who survived. According to the Daily Mail: She was shocked to discover that another child, born in the U.S. at 21 weeks and six days into her mother's pregnancy, had survived. Amillia Taylor was born in Florida in 2006 and celebrated her second birthday last October. She is the youngest premature baby to survive. Miss Capewell said: "I could not believe that one little girl, Amillia Taylor, is perfectly healthy after being born in Florida in 2006 at 21 weeks and six days. "Thousands of women have experienced this. The doctors say the babies won't survive but how do they know if they are not giving them a chance?" Miss Capewell has won the support of Labour MP Tony Wright, who has backed her call for a review of the medical guidelines. He said: "When a woman wants to give the best chance to her baby, they should surely be afforded that opportunity." The past several generations of legalized abortion have seen an increasingly perverse disregard for the precious lives of children. The heartlessness of guidelines that decide which children live and which ones die did not emerge overnight. But Americans should ask themselves: "What would my doctor do, if he was under such guidelines?" How many doctors will simply follow orders and allow children to die of neglect because some medical Star Chamber a thousand miles away pondered the actuarial tables and issued decrees regarding who may live and who will die? For those of us who are fathers or mothers of premature children, the question is: "What would have happened to my son or daughter if such guidelines had been in place when my child was born?" How long would it be before tragedies such as befell Jayden Capewell begin to happen here under socialized medicine? And ask yourself: As the availability of medical care steadily shrinks in a socialized system, will the guidelines keep moving to exclude more and more people from coverage at the beginning and end of life? Lawyer faces fine, jail time after using expletive at trial - Austin American-Statesman Posted: 18 Sep 2009 01:09 PM PDT COURTS
A defense attorney was found in contempt of court Thursday and sentenced to 10 days in jail and fined $1,250 in an unusual twist to a trial that was later halted when his client admitted to injuring an 11-month-old baby in her care. Tamika Andrews, 27, faces 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree felony injury to a child in recklessly causing the baby's head to strike a blunt object. Earlier, after cross-examining an Austin police detective, Edmund "Skip" Davis returned to the counsel table and said, "I love this (expletive)." State District Judge Charlie Baird accused Davis of cursing within earshot of the jury and then lying about it. Baird said prosecutors Jackie Wood and Steven Brand approached the bench and complained to Baird about the comment. Davis denied saying it, Baird said. But three jurors later told Baird they heard all or part of the comment, he said. Baird said he issued the fine because the jurors heard the comment and tacked on the jail sentence because Davis lied about it. Baird said Davis would remain free on a personal bond until the end of the trial, at which time he will be ordered to jail. "I think it is disrespectful, unprofessional conduct during the actual course of a trial," Baird said. Davis declined to comment. The trial will resume today, when the jury will begin hearing evidence during the punishment phase. Andrews was initially charged with first-degree felony injury to a child, punishable by up to life in prison. Keith Lauerman, Andrews' other lawyer, said his client is "taking full responsibility." Andrews took the baby to Dell Children's Medical Center on May 4, 2008, telling police that day that the baby fell from an unsecured car seat when she stopped suddenly while driving, according to a police affidavit. After doctors told police that the head injuries did not appear to be from a fall, police interviewed Andrews again, the affidavit said. During that interview, Andrews demonstrated for police that after the baby fell, she shook the baby violently in an attempt to wake the baby up, the affidavit said. skreytak@statesman.com; 912-2946

Dumped in dirty gutter, now Baby Fashola - Vanguard Posted: 18 Sep 2009 09:20 AM PDT By Fredrick Okopie The birth of a new baby usually evokes joy in the proud parents who sometimes roll out the drums to celebrate the happy event, especially if the baby is coming after a long wait by the couple following their wedding. Among some families, the celebration may entail them barricading an entire street, especially if they are well-to-do and the baby is the first child of that union. At such an event, the celebrants and their guests may be seen donning fashionable uniformed wears as is usually the case with Nigerians in the South West who often settle for their trademark Aso ebi. Also a party of this nature can never be complete without abundance of food and assorted drinks with enough music to tease all present to the dancing floor. Children, the Christian Holy Book says, are blessings from God and therefore should be treasured and treated with care and love. In fact, Jesus Christ, the Biblically acclaimed son of God, had cause to rebuke his disciples for scolding those bringing little children to Him for blessing. But it will appear that one woman's bundle of joy is another woman's burden of pain. For instance, a certain mother somewhere in the sprawling slum community of Tolu in Ajeromo Ifelodun Local Government obviously did not believe in the Biblical statement that a child is a special blessing from God when she decided to dumped her newly born baby rather than celebrate her birth like some happy parents are doing. In fact, it came as a big shock to some residents in the area when they stumbled on a black polythene bag dumped inside a dirty gutter which on close examination was found to contain a baby girl with a cellotape across its mouth, apparently to prevent it from crying. A middle age man was the first to recover from the shock and subsequently took the 'strange package' to the Tolu Police Station When Policemen at the station later freed the baby from the bag it was discovered that its umbilical cord had not been cut. According to a Vanguard Metro source, the baby was taken to the nearby Tolu Medical Centre for attention 30 minutes later. The hospital took custody of the child. Vanguard Metro's initial efforts to see the baby ran into a brick wall as the Police were not initially forthcoming on its whereabout. A senior Police officer at the Station declined information pertaining to the baby and referred all enquiries to the Police Public Relations Office, Ikeja. When our reporter visited the Tolu Medical Centre, the Medical Director, Dr. Sodipo Gbolahan, confirmed the story that an abandoned baby was brought to the hospital in the morning by policemen from the Tolu station, with the umbilical cord still intact. He later led Vanguard Metro to the ward where nurses taking care of the baby assured that she was doing well. The card with which the baby was registered read: Fashola Joy Tolu. According to Dr. Gbolahan, the baby was christened after Fashola because he is doing well as the Governor of Lagos State. Speaking to Vanguard Metro the midwife saddled with the responsibility of taking care of Joy said: "From my own experience as a midwife, the baby was delivered that very day she was thrown away, because we separated the umbilical cord and treated it as usual. We also pierced her ears and fixed earrings in them. But up till now nobody has come forward to lay claim as the mother". She also informed that the baby was not on breast milk, which exposes her to risk. She, however, assured that since she was in hospital there was no problem. But the State Command Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, an Assistant Superintendent of Police(ASP), Chris Onyeisi told Vanguard Metro that Baby Fashola was later transferred to the Juvenile Welfare Centre(JWC) at Alakara, Munshi. Vanguard Metro learnt that she was later taken to an undisclosed orphanage homer. CITY BRIEFS VC makes case for moral values VICE Chancellor of Covenant University, Ota, Professor Aize Obayan, has restated the need for Nigerians to be orientated towards good moral values, saying that it takes precedence over calls for reorientation of the country's population. Prof Obayan, who said this at this at the Millennium Development Goals Reorientation Programme, held recently in Lagos, argued that Nigerians should ask if there was ever an orientation before calling for reorientation. According to her: "When talking about the programmes that will bring the new face of Nigeria, we need to talk about orientation. But when talking about re-orientation, you ask yourself if there was ever an orientation. What we need now is orientation that will produce core moral values and that is what is happening now. I believe that it will form the specifics which will drive the life our nation". She further challenged Nigerians to always query and question the system, adding that it will promote the unity of the nation. Muslims to look out for new moon The Chairman of the National Moon-sighting Commitee, Group Captain Usman Jibril (rtd) also advised chairmen of states moon-sighting commitees to be vigilant and co-operate with their respective Vice-President-Generals in the verification of the end of Ramadan. Jibril, according to a statement by NSCIA's Director of administration, Amin O. Igwegbe, said that Muslim faithful should look out for the moon and report to the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammed Sa'ad Abubarkar after due verification and confirmation. He also warned that the only authorised person to officially announce the sighting of the moon for termination of Ramadan fasting is the leader of the Muslim Ummah, the Sultan and President-General of NSCIA. Jury resumes deliberation in slaying of Murietta National Guardsman - sign on sandiego.com Posted: 18 Sep 2009 09:42 AM PDT MURRIETA Jurors are scheduled to resume deliberations today in the trial of a man accused of murdering his lover's husband -- an Army National Guard member who had just returned from Iraq -- in a confrontation over the care of the defendant's baby. Fabian Cayetano Urrea, 24, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jorge Estrada, 24, who was gunned down June 9, 2005, in the parking lot of the Jackson Avenue apartment he shared with his wife in Murrieta. Jurors on Thursday completed their first full day of deliberation without reaching a verdict. The panel did ask a question about premeditation during the later part of the afternoon, according to court records. Closing arguments were heard Tuesday. "He executed an unarmed man in cold blood," Deputy District Attorney Sam Kaloustian told jurors in his closing argument, adding that after he shot the man, Urrea shouted, "I told you I would get you." Kaloustian told jurors that Urrea, Estrada and Estrada's wife were involved in a love triangle that turned violent after Urrea found out the woman he considered to be his girlfriend was married. According to prosecutors, Urrea had a long-term relationship with the woman, whom he impregnated in 2004. Unbeknown to Urrea, the pregnant woman married Estrada in late 2004, telling her new husband she had been raped by Urrea, prosecutors said. When her husband was shipped to Iraq in 2005, Diana Vicky Estrada, then 20, continued having an affair with Urrea, who remained unaware of her marriage, prosecutors said. When the child's birth neared, Diana Estrada told Urrea she was going to Texas to have the baby, prosecutors said. Diana Estrada testified in a 2007 preliminary hearing that while she was in a hospital to give birth, she told Urrea over the phone that she was married to Jorge Estrada. She also said her husband -- who had been given emergency leave to be with his wife for the child's birth -- told Urrea to stop calling her. Diana Estrada also admitted to Urrea that she had not gone to Texas but was giving birth in Murrieta, she testified. According to Kaloustian, an angry Urrea went to the couple's apartment with a gun and shot Jorge Estrada to death in the parking lot. But defense attorney Michael La Cilento disputed Diana Estrada's testimony, telling jurors that Urrea did not find out she was married until the day of the shooting, when he went to visit her and see his baby girl. When Urrea showed up at the apartment, Jorge Estrada came downstairs with his wife. Urrea had "no clue who Mr. Estrada was," La Cilento said. He said his client snapped when Jorge Estrada told Urrea, "You're lucky if I let you see the baby." Jorge Estrada, who was bigger than Urrea, then began advancing, La Cilento said. "They're about to fight," the attorney said. "They're about to throw down." Urrea backed up, and thinking the bigger man would hurt him, he pulled a gun and shot at a downward angle, the attorney said. "There's no premeditation," La Cilento told jurors. Testifying for the defense last week, the defendant's father, Cayetano Urrea, said Diana Estrada and his son were seeing each other between January and June of 2005. Through an interpreter, Cayetano Urrea said he knew nothing about Jorge Estrada until police came to his house to tell him his son was wanted for questioning in the death of the National Guardsman. Following the shooting, Urrea fled the country. He was apprehended about two years later in Mexico, where he was working at a motorcycle shop in Culiacan, Sinaloa. Diana Estrada, who refused to testify at Urrea's trial, was placed on probation in 2008 for abusing Urrea's child. Last month, while still on probation, she was arrested for allegedly abusing another daughter she subsequently had with another man.
