In a difficult business environment employee buy outs are a popular way for corporations to cut cost. An obstacle to accepting a buy out is often the cost of private health insurance. For this I have a modest proposal. Simply offer Medicare as an option to those 59 years of age or older. The age group 59-65 has fewer medical problems than those 65 + so per person Medicare cost would drop. Insurance companies could continue to insure only the young and healthy and corporations solve employment problems and increase productivity as they return from recession.

Help name the baby giraffe at Binder Park Zoo - Battle Creek Enquirer

Posted: 01 Sep 2009 11:49 AM PDT

From now until Labor Day, Binder Park Zoo is asking for input from the community to name one of the two new baby giraffe born at the Zoo. Binder Park Zoo's animal care staff has come up with a list of four possible names for the calf, all of which are Swahili. The choices and their translations are: Zuri Kijana - "Pretty Boy," Dhoruba - "Storm," Shangaza - "Unexpected Surprise," and Dogo Ndugu - "Little Brother."

The success of these births is not only an accomplishment for Binder Park Zoo, they are something that the entire community can be proud of. Extraordinary events like this would not be possible without the generous support of countless members, guests, and donors. "We wouldn't be here without the support of our great community," says Stacey Lawson, Chief Operating Officer. "We thought it was only appropriate for the community to help choose the name for one of the babies."

Guests that visit the Zoo from now until September 7, 2009 will be able to vote on the names by dropping coins, Binder Park Zoo tokens, or cash into a display matching the name that they like the best.

Voting will also be taking place online on the Zoo's Facebook page through the Causes application. No donation is required and you can even send invitations to your friends to get more votes for the name you like the best. Just hop onto www.facebook.com/binderparkzoo to learn how to vote for your favorite name for the Zoo's new bouncing baby boy.

A timetable for the youngsters to appear on exhibit has not been set, however, guests are able to see a video of the birth and footage from their young lives at a special exhibit in Wild Africa courtesy of Best Buy.

"Before they go out on exhibit, we need to introduce them to the rest of the giraffe herd and then acclimate them to the exhibit," says Jenny Barnett, Director of Wildlife. "The safety of our animals comes first, though we want to get them out on savannah to share with our guests as soon as possible."

Just the ticket - Grimsby Telegraph

Posted: 01 Sep 2009 07:17 AM PDT

A TOP musical performer is hoping his latest raffle fundraiser will be just the ticket.

Michael Dore is giving away tickets to see his show at the Royal Albert Hall to help the neonatal unit at the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby.

He was approached by Grimsby Baby Care, who wanted to get a glidescope for the ward. The device will help see into the airways of premature babies.

Michael, who has performed with some of the world's top orchestras, and appeared on television and radio across the world, said: "I first got involved helping children's wards in Iowa, where I performed on a telethon to help Mercy Hospital.

"When I came back, I thought about doing something in my home town of Grimsby.

"When I got to see the neonatal unit, I thought it was fantastic. I didn't think it would compare to the big flash American hospitals – but it's amazing what they do here, and there's never enough money."

It was then he agreed he would donate two tickets to see his Best of Broadway show at the Albert Hall on November 26. The winner will bag two tickets to see the show, transport, and an overnight stay.

Carol Hall, secretary for Grimsby Baby Care said: "We liaise with the staff, and ask them what they want to purchase, and then we help to raise the money for it.

"I think this is fantastic, and we are so pleased Michael is helping us."

Barbara Eger, unit ward manager, said: "The glidescope will help doctors to know where to put a small tube down a baby's trachea, to help them breathe.

"It's a complex procedure, so we would be excited to see the glidescope."

The draw will take place on Thursday, October 29 at noon.

For tickets, call (01472) 506007.

Cops: Baby's toes chewed off by pit bull - United Press International

Posted: 01 Sep 2009 10:09 AM PDT

JACKSONVILLE, N.C., Sept. 1 (UPI) -- A North Carolina couple are facing felony child abuse charges after a pit bull chewed off their 4-month-old son's toes, police say.

Sheriff's deputies in Onslow County have charged Robie Lynn Jenkins and her boyfriend, Tremayne Spillman, alleging they were taking care of the dog in their home early Monday, fell asleep and awoke to find the baby's toes missing, WWAY-TV, Wilmington, N.C., reported.

Authorities told the Jacksonville, N.C., Daily News Jenkins claimed she and Spillman were sleeping in the same room as their son and that the dog was unrestricted. She reportedly said she was taking medication and never heard the child cry, discovering the missing toes only when changing his diaper the next morning.

Sheriff Ed Brown said the child was taken to Pitt Memorial Hospital where doctors reportedly said the child may lose the rest of his left foot. Brown told the Daily News the dog belonged to Aaron Watkins, 36, who at the time was being held at the Onslow County Jail after being charged with possession of a firearm by a felon.
