Introducing Your Baby to Your Pet

Posted: 03 Sep 2009 08:15 PM PDT

Having a baby is one of the most exciting times of your life, but many parents worry about how to introduce their new bub to their new existing pet. Meredith interviews Sally from the RSPCA about introducing your baby to the family pet.

As soon as you know you are pregnant its time to start planning. There are a lot of things you can do to make the transition really smooth. Sally recommends that the first step is to decide whether the pet is going to be a indoor pet or outside pet when the baby arrives home. A lot of us have animals that we treat as children, then once the children come along the pet gets pushed outside and not spoken to anymore. So try very early along to make that decision weather or not you are going to allow your pet inside or out.

Once you have made your decision, start training the dog to its new life, perhaps introducing it one day at a time, as so buy the time the new baby arrives the pet isn't really associating the baby's arrival with its new outside life. Another great tip is get your dog used to the pram and by doing that it is training your dog to walk by the pram, so take the dog and the pram out for a walk around the street and get the dog use to it.

One of the first things is introducing your dog and cat to your baby formerly, it sounds kind of ridiculous but it is really important and it will effect their relationship that the dog or cat has with the baby from the time the baby comes home. So making it a positive thing is really important.

Introducing your dog

Have your dog on a lead and insure that the dog is under control at all times, sit the dog down near the baby, show the dog the baby then feed the dog a treat or give the dogs its favorite toy. What the animal will do is associate the positive happy things with the baby. So every time the dog is around the baby give it treats or its ball or you do something the dog really values its going to associate the baby with positive rather than negative. You need to try and be calm and have people their to help you, someone the dog know to help you introduce the baby and the dog.

Introducing your Cat

Cats love to sleep high near warmth and that's what a baby is to them, cats are curious and territorial. Introduce the cat and the baby again in a controlled situation allowing the cat to walk into the baby's room supervised, because if you don't let the cat in the room, every time you leave the room the cat will want to get in.Just making it part of you daily life allowing the cat in the room while you are there. A few good tips for people who have cats then have a baby is to put a fly wire door on the babies room. Also water bottles are great ways to keep cats off things you don't want them on, cats hate water.

Toddlers is a difficult stage. Always supervise, Never leave your child alone with your pet because toddlers are not able to read the signs that the dog or cat is giving.

The Three Main Types of Car Seats For Your Child

Posted: 03 Sep 2009 07:31 PM PDT

There are three main types of car seats that will be used throughout the growth cycle of your children. The type used will be determined by the weight and height of your child rather than the age. In this article, I will detail the three main types of car seats, and the size limit of each so that you will know which car seat is appropriate to use for your child in relation to his or her development.

The first car seat I will cover is the infant car seats. All infant car seats are rear-facing only and can be used until your baby weighs about 30 lbs. However, you may find that different brands have different standards, but the 30-pound limit is the average. Infants should always travel in their car seats every single time they travel by car. They are essential for protecting your child from injury and death in case of an impact.

The next car seat I will cover is the convertible. This one differs from the infant in that it can be used both rear facing and front facing. It can be used until your baby weighs about 40 lbs, and in some cases even heavier. Some can even hold children up to 80 pounds! Because they can accommodate larger children, convertible cars seats are typically larger than infant car seats. Convertibles do not have bases and are not easily moved from one car to another. Some parents find these bigger seats more difficult to use for smaller children.

The last type of car seat I want to cover is the booster. This type is generally the most common type. They are used for children who have outgrown their regular ones but are not yet big enough to use a seat belt. This is usually achieved when your child is about 4'9". Believe it or not, some boosters are built just like the combo seat in that they can feature a back like a car seat. The difference is that they lack the harness restraint system. Once your child has outgrown his or her infant car seat, or the convertible, they should be able to sit safely in a booster car seat.

A car seat must be used every time your child travels with you in your vehicle. Determining which one to use among the three main types is easy when you know what to look for. Your choices are the infant car seat used for children up to 40 lbs, the convertible used for children weighing from 40 lbs up to 80 lbs, and the booster used until your child is big enough to use the seat belt properly. Keep in mind that the age of your child isn't going to be the determining factor in the choice of seat. It's your child's weight and height.

Kids Bedding Can Change the Room

Posted: 03 Sep 2009 05:18 PM PDT

Kids bedding has to be strong and durable, fun and playful, and (this part is important) affordable. That may seem like a pretty tall order when you're just trying to find something that will keep your children warm on a chilly night. But you have to ask yourself: is that all it really is? Or is it worth taking the time to turn simple blankets and pillows into something more? The simple fact is that some interesting and unique kids bedding can change the entire feel of the room and make it a place your children will always enjoy.

You can find kids bedding that can compliment any theme, whether it's sports, superheroes, or spritely fairies. If you have children that are fascinated with trucks or ponies or anything else, there's a good chance you can find the bedding that will make them smile. But remember: you don't have to limit yourself to the set that fits with the rest of the room. In fact, if you find a set that your child just loves, the rest of the room will take care of itself and develop around it.

What should you look for when it comes to kids bedding? There are more options than you may think, and it's about more than just picking out a blanket that has Spiderman swinging across a cityscape. Adding some unique bedding to the room requires a more thoughtful approach.

First of all, are you looking for a full set of bedding, or do you only require one or two pieces? You can get themed kids bedding that includes quilts, duvets, sheets, pillows, and even curtains. Will one set be enough, or, if you mix and match, will two sets of bedding allow you to make things really interesting?

Of course, not everyone can afford multiple sets of bedding for their children. The Internet, though, has become a great place to go for some incredible deals on a wide variety of items. With just a couple clicks of the mouse, a person can go from retailer to retailer until they find the best price on the bedding that they want.

The next thing to consider is the material that goes into the bedding. Is it cotton or polyester? Which one feels more comfortable to your child? After all, bedding isn't just about keeping them warm. It's about helping them sleep through the night, and if the material feels scratchy or uncomfortable, they (and probably you) are going to be in for a lot of restless nights.

Just remember when you shop for new kids bedding that the most important thing isn't matching the dcor of the bedroom, but matching the personality of the child. When you can make the room reflect the child's personality, even if it's only a bit, then you can build a room your children will always thing of fondly.

The Basics of Cloth Diapers - 4 Types of Cloth Diapers

Posted: 03 Sep 2009 02:52 PM PDT

Want to use cloth diapers, but not sure where to start? In the beginning this can be very confusing if you are not familiar with the types they offer. There are 4 types of cloth diapers you can choose to use.

1. Prefold Diapers

Prefolds are the least expensive cloth diaper available and the least convenient as well. With these diapers you have to fold them. The diaper itself has 3 sections with the middle having the most layers or being thickest to help with absorbency. Each layer has a number for example 4-8-4.These numbers represent how absorbent the layer is going to be.For example the outer part of the diaper is 4 layers thick with the middle being 8.Prefold diapers require both a cover and fasteners (like pins).

2. All In Ones

All In Ones (AIO's) are exactly as they sound and do not require a wrap or even fasteners, plus they are waterproof. They have elastic around the legs and around the back for a better fit.The fasteners are usually velcro or snaps and are attached to the diaper. The AIO's are the most convenient because you do not have to add anything else to these and they are a little easier to pack in the diaper bag.One of the disadvantages of the All In One diapers is that they can be a little tougher to clean and take longer to dry.

3. Pocket Diapers

Pocket Diapers are similar to the All In Ones. The main difference being they require a stuffer material to be placed into the pocket of the diaper before use.Two advantages of the pocket diaper are that you get to pick what type of material you want to use and you can customize how much you want to stuff into the pocket to accommodate your child.A disadvantage is that they can be bulky depending how much stuffing material you put in the pocket.

4. Fitted Diapers

Fitted Diapers are the next step up from the prefold or flat diapers. These diapers fit snug up to your child and have elastic on the legs and around the back. They are easy to put on and easy to clean. These are very similar to the AIO's, but they are not waterproof and do require a wrap or cover.

Cloth diapers might take you awhile to get the hang of and you might go through a couple of differenttypes before you decide what works best for you and your child. But in the long run it is definitely worth it.
