Landrum woman charged after baby in her care dies - Greenville News Posted: 24 Sep 2009 01:35 AM PDT LANDRUM A South Carolina woman has been arrested after a 5-month boy in her care died. Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that 43-year-old Evelyn Deneice Petty of Landrum is charged with homicide by child abuse. The charge carries a sentence of 20 years to life in prison for a conviction. A police report shows Petty told authorities she put the boy to bed with his sister around 1:30 a.m. Sunday and tried CPR after finding him unresponsive around 7 a.m. An autopsy determined that the baby's death was suspicious. Authorities are awaiting the results of a toxicology report, but they think the baby was shaken. Petty was being held Wednesday at the Spartanburg County jail. It's unclear if she has an attorney. Aberdeen woman reports glass in baby food - Argus Leader Posted: 24 Sep 2009 09:42 AM PDT ABERDEEN The maker of Natures Goodness baby food says it will look into a report by a South Dakota day care provider who says she found a piece of glass in a jar of sweet potatoes. Chicago-based Bay Valley Foods spokesman Ron Bottrell says the company takes the matter seriously and is making it a priority. He says the company has not had any similar reports. Jodi Gardner of Aberdeen says she opened the sealed jar Wednesday and found the glass, which she believes is about half of a broken-off rim of another jar. She says she fed some of the food to a 7-month-old boy before discovering the glass. He was not hurt. Gardner says she also has notified the federal Food and Drug Administration. Couple arrested for baby's broken bones - WISH-TV Posted: 24 Sep 2009 07:55 AM PDT TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A mother and father face felony are facing felony charges for allegedly abusing their baby. Police said Christopher Wilson, 20, and Lucy Wilson, 19, denied medical attention to their 5-month-old baby boy after Christopher allegedly broke the baby's leg. The baby was already receiving medical care at home, being hooked up to a feeding tube since he was born prematurely. According to court documents, Lucy Wilson admitted to police her husband beat the baby when the child would move his feeding tube. In August, she told police Christopher Wilson admitted to her, that he "broke him," twisting the baby's leg causing it to fracture. In the court documents, the doctor told police the fracture was a spiral fracture and it would have taken tremendous force to cause the injury, causing severe pain to the baby. Terre Haute Police Detective Rick Decker said this instance is a bad case of child abuse. "Especially with the femur, that's a hard bone to break," Decker said. Police said the baby had several older fractures as well. Police said it took a month to arrest the parents, as they had a lengthy investigation. "Cases like this are some of the hardest, we've learned from experience, because the victim can't tell you what happened," Detective Jim Richardson said. The baby is currently healing and in foster care. Lucy Wilson faces two felonies for neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury. Christopher Wilson faces those same charges as well as battery resulting in bodily injury. Their bond is set at $75,000. The Wilsons are expected in court Thursday morning. Baby boy born at astonishing 19 pounds - eMaxHealth.com Posted: 24 Sep 2009 01:02 PM PDT In Jakarta, Indonesia, a 41 year old woman had an emergency cesarean section to deliver her rather large baby boy. The baby boy was born at an astonishing 19 pounds! Apparently healthy and doing well, the physician who delivered him states that he eats almost nonstop. Dr. Binsar Sitanggang was the gynecologist who performed the emergency c-section on the mother, Ani. The baby was so large, there was no way he could be delivered safely without a cesarean section. It was life-threatening for both the mother and the baby. However, Dr. Sitanggang reports that the surgery was complicated because the baby boy was so big. His legs were so big that it was hard to get him out, writes Daily Express. Mothers who deliver large babies often have diabetes. Dr. Sitanggang feels that diabetes is likely the cause for the baby boy's birth weight being 19.2 pounds and his length being a whopping 24 inches. When compared with other newborn babies, this baby boy looks like a giant. He will obviously be wearing clothes that fit a toddler. Although he was so large, he appears to be healthy. The normal weight for a newborn baby is between 6 pounds, 2 ounces and 9 pounds, with 7 ½ pounds being the average size of a new baby. There are several factors that weigh in with the size of newborns. The size of both parents is a big contributor as well as the health of the mother, according to KidsHealth.org. Health care professionals keep track of the growth of the baby from the time prenatal care begins until they are adults. Any variation in growth patterns are monitored by professionals to determine if it is normal or if there may be a problem. So, is baby boy from Indonesia the largest baby ever born? No. In fact, in 1879, Anna Bates, a Canadian, gave birth to a little boy who weighed 23 pounds, 12 ounces and was 30 inches long. However, he died 11 hours after birth. His mother, Anna Bates, had gigantism which made her one of the tallest women on earth. Another baby born at 22 pounds, 8 ounces was born to Carmelia-Fedele from Italy back in 1955 and he was healthy, according to PregnancyandBaby.com. Blessed with three other children at home, the mother of the 19 pound baby boy will be bringing home quite the surprise for her family. Due to the mother's diabetes, the extra sugar was given to her baby, making him grow unusually large. Diabetes is screened for early in a woman's pregnancy in the United States. If you are pregnant and concerned that you may have diabetes, talk with your doctor.
