And for girls? Isabella takes the number one spot away from Emma. BabyCenter has just released its list of most popular names for the decade and for the year. The 2009 list reveals the influence of pop culture and the affinity for gender neutral names, particularly for girls. BabyCenter's survey also shows an increase in the popularity of iconic celebrity names, inspired by stars who died. The name Jackson jumped three spots on the 2009 list and is now the third most popular boys name, and the name Heath (Heath Ledger) has also climbed the charts. (BabyCenter's Top 100 Baby Names list is derived from over 400,000 names submitted by BabyCenter parents of newborns in 2009.) Here are the Top 10 names for boys and girls of the decade: Girls Boys But Twilight had a big impact this last year. To see the Top 10 names for boys and girls of 2009, hit Read more.

Ryan and Sophie are top baby names in Paisley - The Paisley Daily Express Posted: 23 Dec 2009 07:16 AM PST Dec 23 2009 by Gavin McInally, Paisley Daily Express BABIES named Ryan and Sophie were last night crowned top of the tots in Renfrewshire. A report by the Registrar General for Scotland shows that Ryan has been the most popular name for boys born in the Paisley area this year, while Sophie tops the list for girls. The runner-up in Renfrewshire's name game for boys is Lewis, which was number one in 2008. Making up the rest of 2009's top 10 are Jack, Max, Alexander, Callum, Dylan, James, Ben and Liam. For girls, the second most popular name chosen by Paisley mums was Emma, with Olivia not far behind in third. And completing the top 10 are Ava, Erin, Rebecca, Chole, Lucy, Amy and Emily. It may well be that mums were inspired by the success of football legend Ryan Giggs, who was crowned 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, and perhaps more than a few of them are fans of pop star Sophie Ellis-Bextor. In neighbouring East Renfrewshire, Adam has been the most popular name for a boy in 2009, while Lucy has been the top name for a girl. Both Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire bucked the national trend for the top boy's name, with Jack proving to be the number one choice in Scotland as a whole. However, Sophie remains a firm favourite in Scotland when it comes to a girl's name. Nationally, the biggest climbers in the 2009 baby-name charts were Owen, which went up 26 places to 32nd, and Miley, which soared 190 places to a new high of 95th. The top 50 names accounted for almost half of all boys' names registered and the top 50 girl names accounted for 43 per cent of the registrations. Duncan Macniven, Registrar General for Scotland, said: "As always, the list of Scotland's favourite baby names is very interesting. "Almost 7,000 different names were chosen this year and around 1,900 boys and 2,600 girls were given names which were unique for 2009." There were two new entrants to the boys' top 20 this year – Lucas and Nathan. Mr Macniven added: "Some boys' names have become less popular, with Kieran, Taylor, Brandon and Declan among those to have dropped down the list. "For girls, Sophie is top for a fifth year. "Amy joins the top 10 and there are two new entrants in the top 20 – Lily and Mia. Rebecca, Caitlin, Iona, Robyn and Cerys were among those less popular than last year."
