LOS ANGELES -- BabyNames.com has released the top, most popular baby names of 2009. The winners: Aiden and Amelia.

The most popular name lists are compiled each year from the preferences of millions of visitors to the BabyNames.com Web site.

"Aiden is still the clear favorite for boys," says Mallory Moss, co-founder of BabyNames.com. "It has been at the top of the list since 2003."

However, on the girls' list there is a new No. 1 name: Amelia. Moss says Amelia follows the popular trend of giving girls "old-fashioned" names. The runners-up were Isabella, Ava, Sophia and Olivia. Both Amelia and Isabella beat out the name Ava this year, which had been ranked No. 1 since 2006.

What creates baby-naming trends? Anything from celebrity babies to popular literature.

"This is the first year the name Vivienne hit the top 100 girls' names, and it's no coincidence that it was the name of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's baby girl, born last year," says Moss.

The Twilight book and movie series is also having a big influence on baby name popularity, as its character names Edward, Bella, Isabella, Emmett, Jacob, Jasper and Esme have all hit the top 100.

Names stay the same as birth bubble deflates - The Canberra Times

WILLIAM and Olivia are the most popular baby names in Canberra for the second consecutive year with official figures showing a substantial dip in registered births for the region.

The Office of Regulatory Services said the number of registered births in Canberra and Queanbeyan to date this year was 5313 down from 5811 in 2008, representing a 9.4 per cent drop.

Attorney-General Simon Corbell said there were 2801 boys and 2512 girls born in 2009.

The suburbs with the most births were Kambah, Queanbeyan, Ngunnawal, Dunlop and Jerrabomberra.

Charlotte remained in the No2 girls' spot this year while Matilda, Grace, Ruby and Isabella were new entries.

Lachlan finished second in the boys' names for 2009. Benjamin returned to the top 10 for the first time since 2005.

Higgins public servants Veronica and Rick Sammons certainly captured the zeitgeist by naming their twin boys William and Lachlan, the No1 and No2 most popular boys' names.

''They both sounded like strong names,'' Mrs Sammons said. ''We picked one each, plus William was my grandfather's name as well.''
