Logan, Addison top baby names in 2009 - Galesburg Register-Mail Posted: 23 Jan 2010 07:09 PM PST After two years of "Aiden" reigning as the most popular baby name for boys in Knox County, there's finally a new name topping the charts. Logan was the No. 1 boy's name for babies born in 2009, according to the Knox County Clerk's office. Ten boys were named Logan, which means "small cove," and only five boys were named Aiden, which means "little fire." "Aiden was so trendy but I guess Logan is a popular name, too," said Heather Hopping of Galesburg. She and her husband Brad brought Logan Dane Hopping into the world on June 4, 2009, at Galesburg Cottage Hospital. Logan has an older brother, Dylan, 12. "In 1997, when Dylan was born, Logan was a popular name," Heather said, adding that Dylan ended up being a popular name for his birth year. The Hoppings didn't choose either of their sons' names for a particular reason, but Heather said Dylan and Logan are "sibling names," or names that go with one another. As for girl's baby names, Addison kicked 2008's Ava out of the top spot. The name was given to eight newborn girls, two of whom had unique spellings — Addisyn and Addyson. Meaning "Son of Adam," Addison is old English in origin and was a common last name before it was appropriated as a unique girl's name in 1994, according to ParentsConnect.com. The Nickelodeon-owned, parenting Web site said the name has been climbing the charts ever since. Seven babies in Knox County were named Emma, the second most popular girl's baby name last year. In 2007, Emma was the top name the county. Seven babies also received the name Ethan, the second most popular boy's baby name According to BabyNames.com, which compiles the top 100 baby names in the U.S., only Ethan and Emma ranked in the top 10. The name Logan ranked 20th and Addison ranked 13th. While no longer No. 1 in Knox County, Aiden was the most popular baby boy's name in the U.S., according to the Web site. It also found that Amelia was the top baby girl's name. 700 - Babies born in Knox County in 2009. 53% - Percentage of boys born in Knox County in 2009. 403 - Babies born at Galesburg Cottage Hospital in 2009. 298 - Babies born at OSF Saint Mary Medical Center in 2009. 80 - Births at Cottage and Saint Mary during the month of August, the most popular birth month of 2009.
