Recently, Shane and Venessa Bernhardt were watching sports center on ESPN and noticed the name of football player Golden Tate scroll across the bottom of the television screen.

Expecting a baby in January, Shane and Venessa were on the lookout for a suitable baby name and the surname Tate struck a cord with the couple.

"We like the name Tate," said Shane, who lives in Logansport. "So we added a Y to it and named our baby Tayte and the middle name is my middle name."

On Dec. 23, 2009, their son Tayte Audel Bernhardt was born at Clarian Arnett Hospital.

Names are the words by which a person is known and some names rise and fall in popularity as the years come and go.

Popular names of the decade included biblical favorites such as Jacob, Daniel and Joshua for boys and traditional names such as Emily, Emma and Abigail, according to the Social Security Administration.

Mallory Moss, co-founder of Babynames.com, said in the beginning of the decade, biblical names were overwhelmingly popular, then unique names gained popularity such as Aiden, Jaden and Braden.

However, now biblical names are becoming popular again and parents are moving away from the Aiden-like names, she said.

She added that there was a huge rise in surnames being used as first names in the early 2000s.

Moss said popular culture will greatly influence baby names for 2010. She predicted that the name Jasper will gain popularity in 2010, namely because of the popular "Twilight" series.

"What's fascinating with 'Twilight' is not only is it wildly popular with teens but also with women (in their) childbearing years," she said.

For girls she predicted that Malia would gain popularity because of Malia Obama and names from Beatles songs such as Lucy and Jude would become popular in 2010.

When it comes to choosing a name, she said people are interested in the meaning behind a name, but the sound and uniqueness are more important.

Maricela and Fernando DeLeon of Lafayette wanted a name for their baby girl that was unique but also reflected their Mexican-American heritage.

They named their newborn daughter Liliana DeLeon.

"I just liked how it sounded so pretty and it was a Hispanic name, which I wanted her to have," Maricela said.

Diana Castrejon of West Lafayette named her newborn son Josvani Regino.

She liked her brother's name, Jovani and the meaning behind it.

"The meaning is God is gracious," the 20-year-old said.

Jill and Max Miller of Lafayette wanted to give their baby a family name.

"We knew when we were dating that if we had a son his name would be Riley," Jill said.

Couples can pick from most popular baby names in Arizona - Tucson Citizen

Anyone who is expecting a child – or perhaps adopting a dog or other pet – may want to take a cue from this year's most popular baby names in Arizona.

You may want to follow the trend and give your kid the hippest name in the state today.

Or you may want to go out on a limb and ensure your tot's kindergarten class is not full of 11 other Jacobs or 22 other Isabellas.

Yes, Jacob and Isabella top the Arizona list this year, according to a news release from the Arizona Department of Health Services.

The guys' side for 2009 is followed up by Alexander, Angel, Daniel and Anthony. Jacob has been leading the pack for the past two decades, with Michael the most popular name for the previous two, ending in 1979 and 1989.

Little girls born this year, after Isabella, are most commonly named Sophia, Mia, Emma and Emily. Isabella's been leading for the past 10 years, with Samantha reigning for the 1990s, Jessica leading the 1980s and Jennifer taking center stage in the 1970s.

The full 2009 lists appear below, with numbers reflecting how many children were given each name.

Can you imagine all the chaos at the dog park if you named you new pooch Mia?

For you couples, or singles, that don't give a dang about popular names, you can go with another method to name your baby or pet.

One is to name the child or dog after a long-dead relative, particularly one that no one really cared for, like big fat Aunt Bertha who always picked her teeth on public transit.

You can also choose to pore through baby name books, look up all the different meanings of names and then argue over which is most beautiful or appropriate.

"We can't call him Max," you say. "It means 'son of the wise leader' and you're kind of dumb."

Of course, the arguments may veer far and away from baby names once the tiffs get started.

A third tactic is to do like some celebrities and come up with the stupidest name you can imagine. Go with one that is ugly and hard to spell, like Phinnaeus, or perhaps name the child after an inanimate object or piece of fruit, like Apple.

"Have you seen Truck? He's not in his playpen."

If all else fails, you can always play it safe and call the dog "dog," call the cat "cat," and name the kid something original, like "Kid."

What do you think?

How do you or did you come up with names for your children or pets?

Do both parties have equal input? Should both parties have equal input?

Did you ever argue over baby names? What happened? Did either of you throw a plate of spaghetti against the wall?

Do you have any people or pets named after you?
