Do Your Toddler's Nightmares Keep You Up at Night?

Posted: 25 Oct 2009 10:23 PM PDT

Dealing with toddlers nightmares is particularly challenging because they often lack the verbal skills to tell you exactly what's wrong, and they may not understand your reassurances that there is no Boogey Man under the bed. Sleep is essential for toddlers, who are going through exponential growth and development patterns. Consistently disrupted sleep can lead to mood and behavior problems.

So what can you do about toddler nightmares? The easiest solution is to let them crawl into bed with you, but that doesn't solve the root cause. Plus, unless you have a King sized bed, it's eventually going to get crowded. You could plop them back in their own bed, with the brusque reassurance that 'it's okay', and hope for the best; although if you choose that tactic, expect to see them again in 10 minutes.

An efficient battle plan to deal with toddlers nightmares will involve a little time, and a little effort on your part, initially. The first step will be to soothe the child. Offer a snuggle, and some gentle reassurance that the dream wasn't real. Let them know that they're safe in their own home, and that you're there to watch over them. Either walk them back to their room, or let them cuddle up with you, and recite a list of positive words and images; mention the Park, or their favorite toy, or Grandma. Reset the emotional tone to a pleasant one, before helping them fall back to sleep.

There are few number of techniques available to help you in this challenge.
