PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A home day care provider was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison for letting a sexual predator abuse and film children in her care.

Concetta Jackson, 47, of Collingdale is the third and final person sentenced in what a federal judge called a "sociopathic" child-pornography case.

John Jackey Worman, 42, of Colwyn sexually abused victims from infants to teens and captured more than 1 million pornographic images, prosecutors said. The unemployed Worman, who lived with a girlfriend's children in a squalid basement apartment, was sentenced to a life term in August.

Co-defendant Dorothy Prawdzik, 45, of Drexel Hill, who took part in some of the sex acts and went to trial last year with Worman, is serving a 30-year term for manufacturing child pornography.

Defense lawyers say the women feared Worman.

Jackson pleaded guilty to a single child-pornography count, prompting Assistant Federal Defender Mark Wilson to argue for the minimum 15-year sentence.

He described Jackson as low-functioning and said she was "blindly indifferent" to the abuse but did not procure children for Worman, as prosecutors allege.

"There is no direct evidence that Concetta Jackson knew that Mr. Worman was going to sexually abuse any infant or minor or even that he was going to produce lascivious photographs or videos," Wilson wrote in his sentencing memo.

However, prosecutors say Jackson turned over children as young as six weeks old knowing Worman would abuse them and let him live in her home with her four children.

Jackson, who was divorced, feared Worman would work to have her children removed from her care if she refused his demands, Wilson said.

Man accused of punching baby in Vermont

The Associated Press - Published: September 10, 2009

SWANTON - A family member caring for a 2-month-old girl in Swanton, Vt., has been accused of punching her in the head because he was frustrated with her crying after he dropped her.

Thomas West was charged with aggravated domestic assault.

Police said the baby's parents brought her to Fletcher Allen Health Care on Sept. 3 and it was determined that she had a fractured skull in two places on the side of her head.

West, who had been caring for their baby, initially said he had no idea what happened to her. Police said he came forward on Wednesday and said he dropped the baby, and later admitted he punched her.

Bail was set at $100,000. West was to be arraigned Thursday in St. Albans.

The article doesn't give the age of the assailant, but states he was a family member. Imagine being so pea-brained that you'd think punching a child would stop them from crying. Unbelievable. He'll be damn lucky if the child doesn't have learning disabilities.

Excuse me- I read this wrong- I thought the man who punched the baby was the father of the child- See what happens when you read an article quickly because you are angry with the topic. And thus, I thought the mother was "involved" with the guy who punched the baby.

My apologies. I still hope the baby is ok, and I still hope the child grows up without long term damage.

Being a parent is very difficult these days, finding a safe, productive, and caring care giver is very hard. I was fortunate enough to stay home with my kids during those early years. Because, I trusted no one with my kids. You just don't want to take that chance. But, sometimes having relatives watch your children is just as bad. They don't always do what the parents would like them to do and like the case of Brooke Bennett, family isn't always safe either. I pray that child grows into a wonderful adult, despite what has happened to her. I feel for the parents-I'm sure they blame themselves because they trusted and chose this person to care for their child.

I think you need a license to operate a baby

I agree Not You...Why blame the mother Colleen? It states that the baby's parents( usually means more than one) took her into the hospital. I doubt very highly that they knew this P.O.S. would do something like this. I hope the baby recovers and the P.O.S gets what he deserves!!!

Colleen, while I understand your feelings on this issue, I don't necessarily blame the parents in this case... if this person was someone who they trusted and never had a history of violence or being short tempered, then they would have no way of knowing that he was going to assault their child. As a mother myself, I have never left my child in a daycare situation, and instead asked close relatives to look after her when it was necessary. I trust a family member more than I trust a stranger to look after my child.

I whole heartedly agree that the man should be given maximum punishment for his actions. I pray that the child recovers quickly without any permanent damage.

I hope the baby is being taken care of by someone who will love her and treat her well- a new mother and father. Take the baby, state people, the mother who left her in the care of this man is as much to blame as he is..

Police: American says baby left in Florence is his - The State

Posted: 10 Sep 2009 01:26 PM PDT

Police in Sugarland, Texas, are investigating on their end, Monastra said, adding that Henry was from the Houston area. Monastra identified the possible mother as Stephany Chavarria, and said in a telephone interview that she had been in Italy with her parents for several weeks.

"We are still investigating, but she could be accused of abandoning a minor," Monastra said, adding authorities have yet to confirm whether Henry or Chavarria is a parent.

"I do think that we will be doing a DNA test to determine the paternity of the child," he said.

Florence police believe the baby was born "either at home or in a hotel," Monastra said, noting that in Italian hospitals all births are registered.

Carmelite nuns at a convent attached to the church have told Italian reporters they noticed a woman with a baby praying shortly before the boy was found. The baby was taken to the hospital for temporary care. Monastra, citing privacy, declined to say where the baby is now.

In cases of abandonment, infants are usually put in foster care until courts determine if they should be put up for adoption.

Monastra said the Texas man told police that when his girlfriend came back from Italy no longer pregnant, she told him that the baby had died.

"We spoke to the purported father by phone and he confirmed everything he had written in the e-mail," Monastra said. He said the woman later told Texas police that she indeed was the mother.

The parents ought to be indicted too for not making sure the person caring for their child was capable. We diligently have background checks and references when you want to toss a hamburger at McDonald's, but not when a child care giver babysits? What were these parents thinking???? Anyone who drops an infant, then punches her and lies to the police must have shown some signs of disreputable behavior before this.

Oh, sure... Strike a two month old baby because she was crying? Isn't that what all two month olds do?

The child is most likely going to suffer from irreversible brain damage, resulting in basic body function and learning disabilities that require extensive and expensive medical treatment... All because this loser lost his cool (supposedly) after dropping the baby![i/]

Damn, make me responsible for a child that age and I'd have it velcroed to my chest six different ways...

So, so far we have neglect, assault with injury resulting, (risk of) injury to a minor, providing false information to a police officer...

I hope the kid comes out of this okay, Mr. West has a paid vacation in Newport courtesy of the state, and the parents are a bit more selective in the future as to who they choose to be responsible for the welfare of their child...

Police: Sugar Land man says baby abandoned in Florence is his - KHOU

Posted: 10 Sep 2009 09:08 AM PDT

ROME -- A Texas man is claiming to be the father of a two-day-old boy who was abandoned in a Florence church several weeks ago, Italian police said Thursday.

Florence Police Chief Giampaolo Monastra said police received an e-mail on Aug. 20 from the man, identified as Brandon Henry. The man wrote that he believed his girlfriend gave birth while visiting Italy and left the newborn in the church, where a nun found the child July 29.

Police in the Houston suburb of Sugar Land, Texas, are investigating on their end, Monastra said. He added that Henry was from the Houston area. Monastra identified the possible mother as Stephany Chavarria, and said in a telephone interview that she had been visiting in Italy with her parents for several weeks this summer.

"We are still investigating, but she could be accused of abandoning a minor," Monastra said.

Still to be determined is whether either Henry or Chavarria is a parent of the child, he said.

"I do think that we will be doing a DNA test to determine the paternity of the child," he said.

All births of children in Italian hospitals must be registered, but it appeared that the boy was born "either at home or in a hotel," the Florence police official said.

When the baby was found, Carmelite nuns at a convent attached to the church told Italian reporters they noticed a woman with a baby praying shortly before the boy was found.

He added that the woman had later told Texas police that she indeed was the mother.
