Top Baby Names of 2009: Amelia and Aidan - PR Newswire (press release) Posted: 16 Dec 2009 05:18 AM PST BabyNames.com Announces Top Names of the YearLOS ANGELES, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- BabyNames.com has released the top, most popular baby names of 2009 and the winners are Aidan and Amelia! The most popular name lists are compiled each year from the preferences of millions of visitors to the BabyNames.com website. "Aidan is still the clear favorite for boys," says Mallory Moss, co-founder of BabyNames.com. "It has been at the top of the list since 2003." However, on the girls' list there is a new #1 name: Amelia. Moss says Amelia follows the popular trend of giving girls "old-fashioned" names. The runners-up were Isabella, Ava, Sophia, and Olivia. Both Amelia and Isabella beat out the name Ava this year, which had been ranked #1 since 2006. What creates baby-naming trends? Anything from celebrity babies to popular literature. "This is the first year the name Vivienne hit the top 100 girls' names, and it's no coincidence that it was the name of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's baby girl, born last year," says Moss. The Twilight book and movie series is also having a big influence on baby name popularity, as its character names Edward, Bella, Isabella, Emmett, Jacob, Jasper and Esme have all hit the top 100. Best and worst celebrity baby names of 2009 - Sydney Morning Herald Posted: 15 Dec 2009 08:51 PM PST Best baby name ... Jennifer Garner and daughter Seraphina. The celebrity name game year got off to an exciting start with the birth of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck's second daughter, whose name remained a mystery for more than a week. When it was finally announced, it was so surprising and lovely that it made the long wait worthwhile: Seraphina Rose Elizabeth, a shoo-in for one of the best celebrity baby names of the year. Our other nominees for best celebrity baby girl name: Mabel Painter: Chad Lowe's little girl's name is a charming, quirky vintage choice, with an original artistic middle name from the hot occupational genre. Helena Grace: The classic Helena is a name just emerging from the attic, chosen by Gossip Girl's Kelly Rutherford. Its originality makes up for the lovely yet somewhat standard-issue Grace in the middle place. Paloma Louise: Ana Ortiz chose this exotic-yet-familiar name for her daughter, with the original Louise, tres chic in Paris, in the middle. Phoebe Margaret: Phoebe is a mythological and biblical name that's newly finding favour, chosen for her newborn daughter by Julianne Nicholson. For boys nominees for best name are: Walker Nathaniel: Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs chose this occupational surname name with the Biblical Nathaniel in the middle. Jasper Warren: The gently old-fashioned Jasper is the choice of actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley and country singer Brad Paisley; Warren in the middle is another long-ignored choice due for revival. Otis Tobias: The bluesy Otis is an offbeat choice of Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer, whose older child has the equally distinctive name of Ruby Sweetheart. Beckett Edward: Nicole Sullivan chose the surname-first Beckett, a new celebrity favourite, for her son, with Twilight hottie Edward in middle place. Blaise Ray: Blaise is the fiery old saint's name revived by Amanda Beard for her son, with jazz favourite Ray in the middle. And as for the worst? The nominees are, for girls: Bandit Lee: Gerard Way's new daughter has a name fit for a criminal, though boy names like Ryker and Gunner are on the rise. Anniston Kae: Chyler Leigh gave her daughter colleague Jennifer's last name, though Jolie is higher on the popularity list. Mars Merkaba: Erykah Badu tweeted her labour and initially claimed she named her baby Twitty Milk. The real name, Mars Merkaba, sounded almost great after that. Almost. For boys, we're sorry to say it was much harder to whittle the worst list down to just three. But our final nominees are: Kaydnz Koda: TPain's son's name takes yooneek spellings to new lowz. Ikhyd Edgar Arular: M.I.A. rocked her son's name, but won't the kids call him Ikky? Sparrow James Midnight: Love or hate Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's newborn son's name? Some see it as charming and original, others as the name of a drab little bird. From nameberry.com MCT fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger. Posted: 15 Dec 2009 07:54 AM PST From 2000 to the end of the decade, traditional names have reigned as the most popularly chosen names for babies, albeit with more modern spellings. Topping the list of the most popular baby names of the decade for boys and girls were Jacob and Emma, respectively. The top boys names of 2009 were Matthew, Owen, Ethan, Jackson, Evan, Braden, Noah, Jack, and Zachary. The top girls names of 2009 were Madison, Emma, Hannah, Olivia, Audrey Isabella, Grace, Taylor and Emily. For the decade, the top boy names were Jacob, Michael, Ethan, Christopher, Jack, Daniel, Aiden, William, Joshua and Ryder. For girls it was Emma, Madison, Emily, Hannah, Olivia, Samantha, Ashley. Ava, Elizabeth and Madelyn. Many of these names were popular in the early 1900's and are now making a resurregence. Variations on their spellings are also very popular, as parents understand the importance of their child's name, but still want to make it unique. An example is the name Aiden, which has also been spelled Ayden, Aidyn, Aden, and Aeden. Even Madeline can be spelled a multitude of ways, including Madeleine, Maddelin, and Madalen. fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger. Baby name eludes Gisele - Bounty Posted: 16 Dec 2009 05:20 AM PST A baby name could be on Gisele Bundchen's Christmas list this year, as she has yet to decide on what to call her new son. The as-yet-unnamed newcomer to the Brady-Bundchen household had a name throughout the pregnancy. But the Brazilian supermodel's husband, American footballer Tom Brady, recently told WEEI Sports Radio that the situation changed at the last minute. "About two days before he was born she said: 'I don't like that name any more,'" he explained. The couple could draw inspiration from the baby names listed as most popular by customised gift website Name Your Tune. In 2009, the website's creator Candace Alper recently told Reuters, the top baby names for boys and girls born in the US have come in a variety of different spellings. For boys, there was Aiden, Aidyn, Aden, Aaden and Ayden, while girls were commonly given some variation on Madeleine, Madalen, Maddelin or Madeline. fivefilters.org featured article: Normalising the crime of the century by John Pilger. Miley Cyrus inspiring parents as a baby name - Examiner.com Posted: 15 Dec 2009 09:46 AM PST Miley Cyrus may have been voted one of the worst role models of 2009, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the "Hannah Montana" star isn't inspiring some parents in terms of baby names. According to a new story by Reuters, "Miley" has been one of the "overnight success names" of the year on website Nameberry. As for other popular baby names inspired by celebrities, apparently Khloe (after Khloe Kardashian) has gained in popularity; some other stars with controversial pasts, such as basketball star Kobe Bryant and actor Jude Law, are also inspiring parents looking for quirky names. The report also says that a few fictional characters are entering the mix, including Edward, Cullen (yep, as a first name), and Bella from "Twilight."
